The Head. Maybe you’re a superwoman who can juggle life without getting a hair out of place, but I’m definitely not. When my hair looks like it went through a car wash, Oribe Thick Dry Finish Spray comes to the rescue by providing shine and manageability.
The Body. Lately I’ve been all about charity fashion. I figure if a girl is going to invest in an outfit, it feels good to know that her hard-earned cash is going to a worthy cause. Treasure&Bond has been a staple of mine since I featured it when the line debuted. A percentage of sales are donated to philanthropies empowering women. In this pic, I’m wearing a T&B blouse. I decided to tie it up since cropped tops with shorts are in this season.
And speaking of shorts, I just had to have this keeper made with love. Members of the Rialto Jean Project painted Levi shorts and jeans and sold them, donating the proceeds to innovative art therapy programs at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and New York. One of my closest childhood friends owes her life to Children’s, where she had frequent stays. Those programs helped her through tough times.
The Toes. A post on style from head to toe wouldn’t be complete without talking about my Toms. I have worn them out dancing, tromping through town, and even walking to a restaurant via a rocky beach. Regardless of the terrain, Toms are unbelievably comfortable.
The location. I chose a construction site because that’s where Girls’ Generation performed their video for Catch Me If You Can, and this is the outfit I wore to teach their dance tutorial.
In my mind Swan Lake is one of the most romantic love stories. And I am especially in love with Royal Ballet’s rendition. For those of you who haven’t had the opportunity to be enchanted by this ballet, here’s how it goes. The handsome Prince Siegfried falls for a beautiful swan, Odette…or rather a beautiful woman who is a swan by day because an evil sorcerer has cast a spell on her.
Once the Prince is smitten with Odette, the sorcerer snatches her from his grasp and casts a spell on his daughter, Odile, to make her look like Odette. Tricked, the Prince agrees to marry the wrong woman. When he realizes his error, he fights for his true love and breaks the spell.
My experience of seeing Royal Ballet’s Swan Lake was especially enchanting because my friend Matthew Golding was playing the role of the Prince (pictured above). I had just turned seventeen when I got to know him. You can probably tell how young we were from the picture below, which was taken outside the stage door. Matt was training with the Royal Ballet School and had been injured for about a year. Every dance step he took brought him pain, but he refused to give up. And look at him now! I’m so proud, and he is such an inspiration for others facing any difficulty.
I also have a soft spot in my heart for Swan Lake because I performed in it when I trained with American Ballet Theatre. Those were the old days when I thought strapping on pointe shoes felt comfortable:)
A girl is always more productive when she slips in a froyo break! I tell myself it’s healthy. After all, the word, “yogurt” is in there… Never mind all the toppings;)
So today’s blog post combines two favorites…frozen yogurt and Diane von Furstenberg. I admit to having worn another dress in a similar cut, but her designs make a woman feel so good that Diane is a go-to. This coral color is all over spring 2015.
DVF is the right mix of sophistication and cutting-edge fashion—meaning that I can wear her dress to a business meeting followed by a cocktail party. And apparently to Yogurtland too!
By now you all know that I love to dance, I love making dance tutorials, and I especially love hearing your requests—which is why I’m extra-excited about my upcoming video. It is a request for a fun K-Pop song, and the timing is perfect because I recently got to see a show featuring K-Pop dancers.
I’m done filming this tutorial and I’ve been editing it. My dear friend from South Korea has been providing me with Korean translations. We’ve been tag teaming. As I edit each section, I send it off her. Then she zips me back the translations and I drop them into the video. I can’t wait for you all to see this one. I sure hope I do the moves justice.
With the next Avengers movie opening in North America this Thursday night, April 30th, the spotlight is on Scarlett and her personal style. During her publicity tour, she is showing that the pompadour hairstyle is still in vogue.
So here’s a throwback how-to hair video on the pompadour, and thanks to Scarlett it’s still fresh. I guess I know what look I’m wearing this weekend!
Scarlett’s style isn’t the only thing about her that’s trending. This past weekend her fourth appearance as the Black Widow premiered in 44 countries and territories. That is only a fraction of the film’s rollout and already it has exceeded the box office success of 2012’s Avengers.
Whenever most people think of a beautiful, accomplished woman like Scarlett, they have a hard time imagining that anything ever goes wrong in her life. But that’s not the case. As she says, “There’s always going to be the more successful person. It’s related to rejection… I’m constantly rejected.” I think we can all relate to that. And consider the fact that if Scarlett is constantly being rejected, she’s constantly applying for roles—there is an important lesson in that too. So we can add to her list of impressive qualities that she’s hard-working and down to earth.
Most of my Meeting Men Mondays focus on females, and their dating triumphs or calamities. But today, I have an interesting insight to help any of you guys who find that you’re infatuated with a girl, but she is taking a little longer to get onboard with the relationship. This is normal, according to Dr. Helen Fisher, a New York biological anthropologist who is also senior research fellow at the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction.
“Men are so visual,” explains Dr. Fisher. “They see a woman who appeals to them physically, and it will trigger the romantic love system faster.” She extrapolated that women are more careful about guarding their hearts. So guys, the one who has captured your heart just might need a bit more time to fall in love.
For those who saw my step-by-step dance tutorial to Meghan Trainor’s Dear Future Husband, you know that I chose a style for it similar to her 50’s inspired look.
While scanning magazines to get my fashion fix, I’ve noticed that the singer was on the cusp of a spring trend. The 50’s-esque dress with a fitted waist and a flared skirt is everywhere. Here are examples of the design with halter tops. They range in price from bargain basement to top floor.
Bebe is showing off a fit-and-flare halter for under $200, while ModCloth has a polka dot quite similar to mine, for about $100 less. And Halston Heritage features a couture version, with a ruffled skirt, that rings up at $425—but it’s style love at first sight.
I’ve wanted to go to Venice ever since I studied the history of its canals in middle school. Somehow I’ve never been able to pull the trip together, but I still love to dream of the places I will visit there when I get the chance. When planning a trip, I think it’s best to learn where the locals go, so here are three recommendations from Venice experts featured in last weekend’s Wall Street Journal.
Fondazione Prada. When a place has a name like Prada, I’m instantly onboard, but this isn’t a couture center, it’s a modern art museum at Ca’Corner della Regina, a spectacular 18th century palazzo on the Grand Canal. Princess Bianca di Savoia Aosta, a designer whose family owns a resort there suggests, “Spend the day in the lesser-known part of Venice and enter every church you happen to bump into. Then drop into Fondazione Prada… Everything I’ve ever seen in there has been astonishing.”
Harry’s Bar. This place is a favorite of Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, who spent six months in Venice writing and directing The Tourist. He calls it “the most satisfying cake experience in the world.”
Doge’s Palace. Located in St. Mark’s Square, this Venetian Gothic edifice is one of the city’s main landmarks. Philip Rylands, director of Peggy Guggenheim Collection on the Grand Canal, says it’s a no-miss and suggests booking the guided secret tour in advance. As he explains, it “takes you out of the glided reception room and into the old offices, meeting rooms and even torture chambers where the real business of government was conducted.”
…and spending time with this gorgeous girl, who also happens to be a Wolford expert! At this point, I’ve featured Yly so much that you probably recognize her. A Wolford ensemble is never at its optimum without her styling talent.
Today’s look is all about black and pink. We chose the Colora Pullover for me. It hugs your body without feeling tight and can take you to a variety of occasions. For a conservative or businesslike event, arrange the neckline so it ends on top of your shoulders. At a spicy soirée, flaunt an off-the-shoulder look.
When it came time to take our pic, Yly joined in the black-and-pink theme by modeling the Colora Shirt. Wolford also has options of skirts or pants to pair with these items.
Shorts season is finally here! Or maybe not, depending on where you live. But I’m in to positive thinking.
These pics were taken in Cabo, but when I touched down in Seattle, my shorts were first to come out of my suitcase. Spring is in full bloom here. When it’s warm outside, comfort is high on my list of couture criteria. That’s one of the reasons why I love this Trouvé top. It’s lightweight with a silky sheen that feels heavenly.
And when the weather is warm, what girl wants to spend time getting ready that could be spent outside? Certainly not me. That’s why one of my new favorite cosmetics finds is Lancôme’s Artliner.
It rolls on in a minute and comes in a variety of colors. I wore black.
Here is a step-by-step break down of Meghan’s moves to her performance of Dear Future Husband.
And here’s a makeup tutorial to get her 50’s look. https://katherinechloecahoon.com/meghan-trainor-makeup-and-fashion/
Dear Future Husband of Meghan Trainor… I have something to add to her anthem… She’s a complete babe. Case closed! And today, I’m teaching how to do her dramatic cat eye from her tongue-in-cheek music video Dear Future Husband.
Since Meghan’s cat eye is thick, she chose to keep her shadows light, making the liner pop. Begin by dusting a pale pink or white shadow all over your eyelids. I chose Bobbi Brown’s white hue. Then I smudged a tiny bit of taupe in the crease to give my eyes depth.
For today’s look, I used YSL’s Eyeliner Effet Faux Cils. I like it because the liner pen has a wider base and pointed tip, making it ideal for creating Meghan’s bold cat eye.
Here are the steps: Start by drawing your upper liner like you normally would. Keep the line thin at first. It’s easy to add on thickness, but artfully removing liner can be tricky.
Next, go over that same line, but this time gradually make it wider beginning at the midpoint of your eye. As you reach the outer edge, make it even wider. Remember, if your line ends up being a bit bumpy, you can always go back and smooth it out with your pen.
Once you’ve obtained the thickness you desire, extend the outer edge in a slight curve…arching up toward your eyebrow. Hint: To create the perfect cat eye, curve up starting where your lower lashes end. This will complement your eye shape.
So now we have a cat eye, but it’s thinner at the outer edges than Meghan’s. All you need to do to get her look is continue brushing your pen along the curve until it’s the thickness of hers. Since your upper liner is such a statement, you only need a slight lower liner. Meghan added a little smoky-eye smudge at the end.
Apply some fuchsia lipstick and you’re ready to find that future husband;)
50’s Clothing. As I’m sure you noticed from her music video, Meghan’s bringing back 50’s fashions. If you’d like to find styles from this era that are reasonably priced, drop by Unique Vintage.
Are you in school and getting excited for a summer trip? Or, are you into your career and planning a business trip or vacation? If so, here are three travel finds for you to consider from Magellan’s. They have seriously useful and inventive travel gear.
Beauty Sleep…isn’t just for Sleeping Beauty:) When I cheered for Vanderbilt, we traveled for games, often squeezing four girls into one small room. We could count on a lot of commotion. One girl would be getting ready–flickering lights on and off–while others were trying to sleep. If you find yourself in a similar situation, consider this lightweight, cushioned mask specially molded to block out the world so you get critical REM sleep.
Stylish in the Sun…without being burned in sunny weather or cold when the clouds roll in. This protective wrap can tie in different ways to give you different looks, and can go from day to evening. It can even cover your head if you’re visiting a holy site.
Traveling in Peace. Unlike the last favorite, this item isn’t stylish but it’s high on the packing list of those prone to motion sickness. Trust me, there is nothing appealing about turning purple on a bumpy plane ride. Acupressure wristbands have saved me from that misery. They work without drugs or side effects. And Magellan’s BioBand is even adjustable.
