If you live in the Seattle area, or if you’re visiting any time from now until August 13th, do yourself a favor and see The Crossing. This is a fabulous, original musical making its debut at Theater Schmeater in ultra-hip Belltown. Yes, that’s the real name!! Those in the know just call it “The Schme.”

Before divulging the charms of this production, it’s only fitting to reveal what led me to the tiny playhouse tucked in an art gallery. When people ask what I like to do for fun, one of the activities I list is indulging in the arts. Now, I’m not talking about buying art objects that cost a fortune. I don’t have that kind of budget. I’m not even talking about a steady diet of major theater productions. I love them, but I can’t afford to indulge every weekend. That is why I like to go hunting for hole-in-the-wall venues with top-flight productions made on a shoe string.

Seattle Theater Scene C

Some of these have reasonable ticket prices while others merely say, “pay what you can.” Yet within these tiny theaters, if you’re lucky you can find the kind of productions that would fill a much-larger house nightly off-Broadway. That’s the Schme. Once inside, you’re welcomed as though you’re a guest in someone’s residence. I felt right at home taking my mom there for a Girl’s Night. Almost everyone in the audience had a connection to someone on the stage.

Seattle Theater Scene D

The Crossing is a cleverly written and staged musical relating the story behind the story of Amelia Earhart’s historic solo flight across the Atlantic. From start to finish, Amelia is spunky, courageous, and vulnerable—all at once. It is always easy to love her. The surprise is that as the play unfolds, the audience grows to understand and care about the other characters. Although history focuses on Amelia, each of them is critical to the crossing—from the hilarious cub reporter to the mysteriously insecure meteorologist whose forecasts gave the pilot faith.

Seattle Theater Scene E

The play, brilliantly written by Paul Lewis, deserves to be on the big stage, and I hope it gets there. https://www.schmeater.org/season/2016/thecrossing

“One of the most celebrated Japanese gardens outside of Japan.” That’s what the Seattle Arboretum Foundation says about its famous Japanese Garden, and I believe every word. I’ve been a member of the Arboretum Foundation since I was a teen. While in high school, my home garden won their Golden Scoop Award at the Pacific Northwest Flower and Garden Show, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Naturally, when I was asked to help with the Japanese Garden’s big auction party, I didn’t have to think twice. I put on a new flowered dress so I would blend in with the environment, and headed out.

This was no ordinary garden party. On that magical evening, the surroundings were surreally gorgeous. Japanese dancers in traditional dress performed. Between their appearances, musicians continuously played, and dinner was served.

The dancers talked to me about their fashions. One of them explained, “they pull in traditional and innovative styles.” Another elaborated, “We combine some masculine elements ̶ like the smaller strips of material ̶ with feminine features. Today, international fashions are bringing together the best of both worlds and that’s what we strive for.”

The entire party felt like a slice of heaven in Japan.

Are you a smooth operator when it comes to dating? Or, are you the queen of mishaps? I’d like to say that I’m the former, but the truth is that there’ve been plenty of times when I wished for a dating do-over.

With college girls getting ready to go back to school, I was thinking about one of my funniest mishaps back in the day. Here goes the confession: I met this guy at a theme party. He seemed cute, but then again it was pretty dark, so “cute” was a relative term considering his features were a bit in the shadows. He was definitely fun though, and that’s what counted, so we set a date.

Here’s the problem: I lived in a place where an available parking space was nearly impossible to find. Because of that, he picked me in the loading zone. The bigger problem? When I approached the curb, two cars were parked there with two guys of the same height and build standing by them. I didn’t have the slightest idea which one was my date. As I looked from one to the other, I hoped for some sort of sign, but they both smiled at me encouragingly.

So I took my best guess, approached one of them with all the conviction I could muster, and received a warm, welcoming hug.

As he began showing me to his car, I was confident that this was the guy. But then the other one blocked his path and asked him what he thought he was doing.

I quickly gave the second man a hug. But I have to admit that it was more than a little meager. You see, part of me wanted to run back to my room, order a full-size pizza, watch TV reruns, and forget about that whole dating business… But sometimes I can’t help wondering what the evening would have been like if I had seen it through with the first guy!

These pictures were snapped as I took a stroll before heading off for a festive event. That’s why I have a fancy do with flowers woven into my hair, and I’m just wearing my casual clothes.
Exploring in Nature A
I’m sure that Mother Nature wasn’t a bit concerned that my flowers probably looked out of place. That’s one of the things I love about her.

Exploring in Nature B
And I’ve come to realize that nature looks equally radiant regardless of what we’re wearing, what kind of a day we’re having, or what we’re doing.
Exploring in Nature C< After fearlessly setting out that day, I learned another truth—the beauty of exploring is that you never know what treasures await down a path. On this day, I stumbled upon an old house, met a woman serenely sitting, and got caught up in a group of kids playing. Exploring in Nature D

Every person who has ever considered taking a trip to Seattle knows that when it comes to destinations, Pike Place Market is at the top of the list. And they also know that the entrance is right under the big sign. It has the gold pig on the left and the flower stalls on the right.

But not everyone knows that there are definite perks to starting at the back of the market and doing it in reverse. In this video, I’m not only showing you why, but I’m interviewing my close friend Denise. Her family owns the Market’s famous Turkish Delight restaurant.

Thank you Denise, for letting us in on the deliciousness that is your restaurant. I’m already getting a craving for more Turkish dessert!

Every girl deserves to go to the ball, and every girl can look like a princess in the emerging Cinderella style. Whoever coined the phrase, “history repeats itself,” was right. No matter how old we get, we can throw on that choker, twist our hair into an up-do, and recapture our childhood feeling of channeling Cinderella…and now you can be on fashion’s cutting edge when you do. Cinderella wears a choker around her neck plus a hair embellishment. This summer’s it-choker sparkles, and you can wear it either around your neck or in your hair… It’s easy to pin in place.

This musical has won four Tony Awards, and I could have won an award for bursting into laughter as I enjoyed the comedy of errors and misdeeds it created through witty banter, punctuated facial expressions made to match the music, and lavish costumes. But I was far from the only audience member laughing…. There was a frequent hum in the air at the Fifth Avenue from continual chuckles, and the actors had to pause frequently for the buzz to die down before delivering their lines. This celebrated play, based on Roy Horniman’s cheeky 1907 novel, The Autobiography of a Criminal, and inspired by the movie, King of Heart and Coronets is a no-miss.

In my ballet days, I used to pick flowers from my garden and intertwine them in my bun. I decided to bring back the look, but for an everyday hair style. Here are some tips.

Think Small. The more compact the flowers, the better. Using tight buds works best because otherwise your petals can float off throughout the day. I especially found this to be true when dancing. Having pedals fly across the floor while pirouetting wasn’t the look I was going for!

Forgo the Prickle. My friend Kylee did my hair for these pictures and she’s always thinking. Before putting the roses into my hair, she took a scissor and trimmed off all the thorns from the stems.

Spray Before Pinning. Hair spray will cause the flowers to wither prematurely, so I always spray my hair before pinning the flowers in.

For those of you who join me on Snapchat (katherinechloe), you know that I’ve been house-sitting in a dreamy Seattle neighbourhood. Seriously, I could never leave the basement here and still feel like a princess. And best of all, it’s close to the Washington Park Arboretum, which is perfect for exploring, jogging, and canoeing amid the water lilies. Here is a glimpse of this beautiful place designed over a century ago by the Olmstead Bros while they were doing Manhattan’s Central Park.

For all of you who love dance, fashion and the Seahawks, you’re going to especially LOVE this video! It features style that’s easy to dance in whether you’re at the clubs or out salsa dancing. And, as you’ll see, I put the fashions to the test.

But on top of that, I’m thrilled that Francisco Lopez filmed and edited this video. He has done major music videos, and his recent short of Seahawks’ safety Kam Chancellor is going viral!

As many of you know, I’ve been doing absolutely everything on my videos myself…including setting my camera on a tripod, running in front of it to film myself, and editing the footage. When I combined that with my regular work, I was barely making it through life…no wonder Ben & Jerry were some of my best friends! But I really enjoy making videos for you all, so I am incredibly grateful to have found Francisco! I’ll still be creating my own videos, but whenever he can make time in his busy schedule for me, you’ll be seeing more from him on my channel. And with his talent, you know everything he does will be great!

Everywhere I look, I see articles on how to lose ten pounds, tone up, and look better. Although those are worthy goals, where are the articles on how to be happy with yourself? Lately, I’ve been focusing on developing healthier habits while not beating myself up for falling short of perfection. I’ve been trying to do what is right for me without worrying about what others think I should be doing. And I’ve discovered that I improve even more when I enjoy every day and refuse to fall into the trap of thinking that life won’t really start until I reach my goals.
