Enjoying Life at Every Stage

September, 25, 2015

My dad recently had his 71st birthday. He looked at me and said, “I never thought I’d reach my 70s. That’s ancient.” My response? “Dad, you know the 70s are the new 50s.” And I meant it!

I honestly don’t think it matters what age we are. What matters is that we are enjoying that stage of life. I remember when I was in elementary school and some of my friends couldn’t wait to get to high school. And then once they reached high school, they couldn’t wait to get to college. And so on… Well, I say we don’t need to wait for anything. The age we are at right now is a wonderful time to live life to the fullest. Tonight is the start of a new weekend, and that is exactly what I plan to do.

And I can definitely tell you that my dad enjoyed his birthday dessert!

I remember my mom telling me over a glass of wine one evening, “you should never be afraid of getting older. Yes, it’s true with each new stage that there are things that you can no longer do. But you’ll also find that there are things you can do now that you couldn’t do before, and new things you can know and understand now that you couldn’t before.

It’s not that each new stage in life is less; it’s just different.”

I absolutely LOVE your mom’s sentiment! I remember meeting her at Vanderbilt. She’s such a beautiful and wise woman.
